Riga is often called Paris of the East thanks to the city’s many tourist attractions and outdoor cafés. Important landmarks are the Museum of Occupation and the Freedom monument in the very centre of Riga. The Estonian capital Tallinn is characterised by its medieval towers in the city centre and buildings from the Soviet era outside the city. The centre of Tallinn was declared World Heritage by Unesco in 1997. This year, 2011, Tallinn is the Culture Capital of Europe.
