New Year’s Eve on Svalbard
FULLY BOOKED

6 days | 5 nights

One of the largest areas of unspoilt nature awaits you. At Svalbard, visitors sink into silence, a silence that cannot be found anywhere else. During winter, the Northern Lights cast a bright light across the sharp peaks of snow-covered mountains in an infinite landscape. Nature becomes a work of art.

It is possible to visit Longyearbyen and take part in our adventurous activity holidays throughout the winter. We organize a trip to celebrate the New Year for five nights from 29 December 2019 to 3 January 2020.

Welcome to Svalbard! Please note that the minimum age for this trip is 14 years.

30 DECEMBER 2019

Snow Mobile Safari searching for the Northern Lights (09:00-12:00)

Finally, it is time for the exciting snowmobile trip in the surroundings of Longyearbyen. On Svalbard there are only 45 km of roads and during the winter time, the only way to reach most areas is by snow mobile. The stars and the moonlight throw light in the polar night giving you an atmospheric experience. On a clear night, it is not unusual to see the Northern lights. The reindeer dig in the snow looking for food and the fox tiptoes around in the dark. We stop to absorb the impressions while the guide serves hot drinks and biscuits. In order to drive a snow mobile you need to bring a valid driver’s license. Two persons per snow mobile. Possibility to drive your own snow mobile at a supplement.

1 JANUARY 2020

Optional excursion – Follow a Trapper’s Footprints (09:00-12:00)

Imagine the life of a huntsman or woman on Svalbard: the loneliness, the challenges and the incredible landscape. Imagine spending the dark months of the Polar Night in a tiny cabin, hidden away in a fjord, several days on foot from the next living soul. We will start the tour in Todalen, one of the side valleys to the south of the larger valley, Adventdalen. Your guide will tell you about Svalbard and the history of the trappers and hunters as you wander away from civilisation. You will also receive an introduction to some of the techniques that were used to hunt for the major fur animals – polar foxes and polar bears. The hunting season started in the late autumn, and the traps had to be checked throughout the winter. As we wander through the Arctic tundra, it is easy to gain a better understanding of this life, and to appreciate how it was to live this far north in this season. To complete the tour, we will enjoy modern comforts the trappers may have missed – with hot chocolate and marshmallows around the fire. Supplement 45 EUR per adult.

2 JANUARY 2020

Snow Cat Safari in the Polar Night (16:00-18:30)

We will meet our guides in the impressive red snowcat outside the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel. Before starting the tour, our guides will give you a quick briefing on the trip. They will then drive you out of town, into the darkness and over the frozen Advent Valley. The trip takes you to Hiorthhamn, a long-closed mining town on the northern bank of Advent Fjord. Here the guide will serve hot drinks and share stories about the area, while you enjoy the views towards Longyearbyen.
