New Year’s Eve on Svalbard 2020-2021
Bookings are now open!

5 days | 4 nights

One of the largest areas of unspoilt nature awaits you. At Svalbard, visitors sink into silence, a silence that cannot be found anywhere else. During winter, the Northern Lights cast a bright light across the sharp peaks of snow-covered mountains in an infinite landscape. Nature becomes a work of art.

.

It is possible to visit Longyearbyen and take part in our adventurous activity holidays throughout the winter. We organize a trip to celebrate the New Year for four nights from 30 December 2020 to 3 January 2021.

.

Welcome to Svalbard! Please note that the minimum age for this trip is 14 years.

Northern Lights Safari by dog sled (09:00-13:00)

The Polar Night is a particularly atmospheric time of year, and dog sledding under starry skies, dancing aurora or glittering moonlight is an experience not to be missed. After helping to harness the dogs your guide will lead the way out from the yards. The dogs will yelp and bark with impatience, but as soon as we get going a beautiful silence will sink over us. The eager dogs will set off at a cracking pace, but after a couple of kilometres they will settle into a comfortable speed. The guide will drive first with two guests in their larger sled, and the group will follow in two person sleds. Participants will be able to swap between mushing and enjoying the scenery from the sled. Out in the dark we will turn off our headlights, and after a short time the contours of the mountains will appear. Looking south, we can see that it is lighter towards the horizon. The snow covered landscape reflects light from the moon, stars and, if we are lucky, the northern lights – and it is astonishing to note just how much you can see in this magical period.

1 JANUARY 2021

Snow Cat Safari in the Polar Night (16:00-18:30)

We will meet our guides in the impressive snowcat outside the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel and you will not miss the big red vehicle when it arrives to pick you up! We head directly out of town, into the darkness and over the frozen Advent Valley. The guides will make several stops underway to look for the aurora borealis and will choose the route into the Advent Valley based on the weather and conditions on the day. As you experience being in the dark in the Arctic, the guide will explain how the aurora is formed, and serve hot drinks and share stories about the area, while you keep your eyes to the sky.

.

Northern Lights Evening at Camp Barentz (19:00-22:30)

The northern lights can be seen 24 hours a day during the Polar Night. Increase your chances by getting away from the lights of town, and learn more about this fascinating display while enjoying a hearty dinner! Our northern lights base is located about 10 km from Longyearbyen at Camp Barentz, well away from the light pollution of the town, giving you an even greater chance of seeing this amazing display. During this all-inclusive evening you will enjoy a fascinating presentation on the Northern Lights as well as a delicious dinner and drinks. This is an indoor activity, however we recommend comfortable outdoor clothing and warm shoes, as you may wish to spend time outdoors looking at the northern lights!

2 JANUARY 2021

Northern Lights Hunt by electric snowmobile (09:30-12:30)

Shhh! Can you hear that? No? It is the sound of absolutely nothing. As you press the gas, the snowmobile starts moving and lights up the dark polar night. But … the roaring noise from the motor is not there. The only thing to be heard is “the Arctic silence”. The sound of absolutely nothing. Join us on a whole new way to experience the mesmerizing polar night and hop on an electric snowmobile! And do not only look for northern lights! Remember to look around you for animals. The Svalbard reindeer, ptarmigans and polar foxes are something we often see out on tour. Two persons per snow mobile. Possibility to drive your own snowmobile at a supplement.
