DAY 2

Husky Safari (09:00-13:00)

After helping to harness the dogs your guide will lead the way out from the yards. The dogs will yelp and bark with impatience, but as soon as we get going a beautiful silence will sink over us. The eager dogs will set off at a cracking pace, but after a couple of kilometres they will settle into a comfortable speed. The guide will drive first with two guests in their larger sled, and the group will follow in two person sleds. Participants will be able to swap between mushing and enjoying the scenery from the sled. Out in the dark we will turn off our headlights, and after a short time the contours of the mountains will appear. Looking south, we can see that it is lighter towards the horizon. The snow covered landscape reflects light from the moon, stars and, if we are lucky, the northern lights – and it is astonishing to note just how much you can see in this magical period. After the trip, we enjoy a hot drink with biscuits in our heated log cabin. As from the middle of January, it is possible to go on our husky safari of eight hours to an ice cave. Contact us for more details.

Northern Lights Evening at Camp Barentz (19:00-22:00)

The northern lights can be seen 24 hours a day during the Polar Night. Increase your chances by getting away from the lights of town, and learn more about this fascinating display while enjoying a hearty dinner at our northern lights base at Camp Barentz, about 10km from Longyearbyen and well away from the light pollution of the town. During this all-inclusive evening you will enjoy a fascinating presentation on these Polar ‘fireworks’, as well as a delicious dinner and drinks This is an indoor activity, however we recommend comfortable outdoor clothing and warm shoes, as you may wish to spend time outdoors looking at the northern lights!

DAY 3

Searching for the Northern Lights by Snow mobile (09:00-12:00)

While the sun is hidden under the horizon, Longyearbyen becomes a magical place lit only by street-lamps, the northern lights and the moon which glitters in the snow. The atmosphere is completely unique, and as you experience this mystical darkness you will know you are a long way from the beaten track. We will head out on snowmobiles into the wilderness. Don’t forget to look up when we stop! Away from the lights of town the aurora is even stronger. Between November 14 and January 29, the Polar Night descends on Longyearbyen. The sun is at least 6 degrees under the horizon at all times, meaning that we can hunt the northern lights at any time of day. Outside of these weeks, we will adjust the start time to enhance our chances of spotting this fantastic phenomenon. We will stop and enjoy the scenery, and the guide will serve hot drinks and biscuits. The reindeer kick in the snow to find their fodder, and the foxes slink around in the dark. If we are in luck, the Aurora Borealis will light up the magical snow-covered landscape. Our chances are good, as we are right in the middle of the aurora zone! No snowmobile experience needed. Easy and flat terrain. As from the middle of February, it is possible to go on a snow mobile excursion for eight hours to Barentburg. Contact us for more details.

Northern Lights Safari by Snowcat (16:00-18:30)

The guides will greet you at the doorstep of your hotel or guesthouse before you head out of town, into the darkness and over the frozen Advent Valley. Several stops will be made underway to look for the aurora borealis, and the guides will choose a route into the Advent Valley based on the weather and conditions on the day. We will visit the old Northern Light station, were they used to do all Northern Lights research. As you experience being in the dark in the Arctic, the guide will explain how the aurora is formed, and serve hot drinks and share stories about the area, while you keep your eyes to the sky. This is an excellent excursion for those who wish to come out of town in the safety and comfort of a warm vehicle. Experience the feeling of standing in the impressive darkness, and enjoy the lights in the sky, and those of Longyearbyen.

DAY 4

Follow a Trapper’s Footprints (09:00-12:00)

Imagine life as a trapper on Svalbard: the solitude, the hardships – and the beauty of this isolated part of the Arctic! Join us on a wandering into the Arctic tundra! On this walking tour you will gain an insight into a trapper’s day to day life. The hunt for polar foxes and polar bears began in the late autumn, and the traps had to be inspected throughout the Polar Night. We will head out on a walk through the tundra to gain an appreciation of the trapping life, and to feel what it must have been like to be out working at this time of year. The tour starts with bus transport to Todalen, and from here we will make our way into the wilderness.

Beer tasting at the world’s northernmost brewery (18:00-19:00)

Join us for a visit at Svalbard Brewery and taste different types of beer. Get insight into the fascinating story of how the world’s northernmost brewery got started. Svalbard Brewery was established in 2011 and tapped its first beer in August 2015. Six years of effort went into changing the law from 1928 which banned the production of alcohol on Svalbard. Robert Johansen, founder of Svalbard Brewery, has been the most important factor for the establishment of a brewery at 78 degrees north. Now, you can get the full story and taste the locally produced beer containing 2000 year old glacial water from the Boge glacier on Svalbard.
