DAY 2

Tromsø

Husky Safari (3 hours 30 minutes including transfers)

The tour begins with a drive to the Kvaløya Island, where you can admire the views of white capped mountains and long fjords. You change clothes and footwear, before hopping aboard the sledges and letting the huskies pull you over the frozen landscape. Experience the beautiful views of the ocean, mountains and open plateaus. The only sound you’ll hear is the dog’s paws on the pure snow.

During the polar night, with clear skies the only light we see is from the stars, the moon and sometimes the Northern Lights. This time of year the sledge ride is done with headlamps. In spring when the sun is back, the climate gets milder and the days longer. Afterwards you are invited into the Sámi lavvo (tent) where you can relax next to the open fire with a hot drink and cake. Learn more about a working day at the Wilderness Centre, dog sledging and the dogs. Transfer to the Hurtigruten ship by minibus.

DAY 3

Cap Nord, Kjøllefjord and Mehamn

Excursion to North Cape (3 hours including transfers)

Welcome to the North Cape – at the very end of the world. The mighty plateau rises 307 metres above the Arctic Ocean, and marks the end point of the European mainland. The journey from Honningsvåg to the North Cape takes you past a wild cliff coast that plunges down into the Arctic Ocean, treeless plains and picturesque fishing villages. In winter and spring, see the frozen shores, endless white plains and snow-capped mountains highlighted by dramatic weather and that special arctic light. In the last kilometres before reaching the cape, the bus has to follow the snowplough. In summer you might see reindeers grazing under the midnight sun, and you’ll have a chance to meet Sámi reindeer herders. The globe sculpture has become the symbol of the North Cape, and is always a popular site for that all-important picture. The North Cape Hall houses a modern visitor centre with a number of facilities. A panoramic film takes you on a beautiful and exciting journey through the area and the dramatic shifting of the seasons. Enjoy a coffee in the café, buy souvenirs and send a postcard from the centre’s very own mailbox!

Snow mobile safari from Kjøllefjord to Mehamn (2 hours 15 minutes including transfers)

Join an unforgettable snowmobile trip to one of Europe’s most extreme and exciting natural areas. Starting at the old trading post and fishing village of Kjøllefjord, over the mountains to Mehamn. On the way, the guides will tell you about the Sámi people, the geographic and climatic conditions, what life is like on the Finnmark coast, and how the local population utilizes nature in both the summer and winter months. Then it’s time to hop onto your snowmobile for this once in a lifetime trip through the fascinating landscape. Experience the snow-clad valleys, the fresh winter air and perhaps the mesmerizing Northern Lights in the clear, starry sky. During spring the sun returns, causing a different experience due to more hours of daylight and milder climate. The trip ends in Mehamn, the world’s northernmost mainland town, located on the often wild and stormy Finnmark coast

DAY 4

Kirkenes

When nature is covered by snow and the temperature is below freezing, there are still many ways to enjoy being outdoors! At Kirkenes Snow Hotel, situated next to Gabba Reindeer Park, you will be kitted out with warm outdoor clothing; snow overalls, shoes, gloves and hats. Then it’s time to meet the dogs! The huskies are harnessed to your sledge, eagerly waiting to transport you across the frozen landscape. There will be two passengers per sledge, each with its own experienced musher, who also serves as your guide. You can just sit and enjoy the ride. The track is just over 5 kilometres long, and goes over a frozen lake with the beautiful star-studded sky above, and then over snowy plateaus – giving you a real feeling of the eternal arctic wilderness. If you are lucky, the Northern Lights will make a magical appearance. At the end of the trip you gather around the fire for

DAY 5

Hammerfest and Tromsø

Guided tour of Hammerfest (1 hour)

On arrival in Hammerfest, the bus will take you to the Meridian Column. It commemorates the first official measurement of the exact size and shape of the Earth, and is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. The place also offers interesting views of Melkøya and the LNG plant where gas from the Snøhvit field in the Barents Sea is processed. Hammerfest has a long, eventful history; back in 1891 it was the first town in northern Europe to get electric street lighting produced purely from hydropower. While heading up to the Mount Salen, you will learn more about Hammerfest’s unique history, and get an insight into the Sámi history and culture. From Salen there is a great view over the town. On the way back you have a chance to see the town church, featuring unusual architecture inspired by fish drying racks!
